The Budding Orchardist: Winter Pruning Little Miss Figgy for Spring

In February, the Cocoa Cinnamon Demonstration Garden team pruned the Little Miss Figgy fig tree to optimize growth for the 2025 growing season. This compact cultivar produces two crops annually and thrives in urban containers. Our resident Budding Orchardist Jeff Kanters takes us through their process.

Garlic! {German Extra Hardy}

Hi there! I’m back to talk about garlic some more. Where I left off in the last post, I told you about previous garlic harvests , the 2023 garlic harvest doing poorly in those raised beds, and that we were wondering where to plant garlic in the fall to have better results. We ended up doing something we had never done before, and that was to plant garlic in pots! It was a curious idea to me at first, I just had never thought of doing that, but it turned out to be a great way for us to grow our garlic. We bought some large pots at a nearby garden center, and planted the garlic in those. We decided to put them in the greenhouse for the winter, because of the issues we had previously with drainage during the rainy winter season. The garlic did so well in pots in the greenhouse that we plan to grow them the same way this year! We plant our garlic in the fall, and then harvest it the following summer. Homegrown Corn

There are some things we grow in the garden every year. The garden “staples”, the things we eat a lot of, the things that grow well here, and the things that we preserve for the winter. Then there are some experiments in the garden each year. Things that we grow because we’re curious. They are sometimes things that don’t necessarily grow the best where we are, but we want to try them anyway. Things like sweet potatoes, for instance, and watermelon (we haven’t given up on that yet.) Growing corn was not really an “experiment”, we’ve grown it in the garden plenty of times before. We don’t grow it every year, though, because we have limited space and limited sun, so we usually devote that growing space to other things. Honestly, corn doesn’t grow the best in our little garden spot, but we like to grow it from time to time anyway. These pictures were from corn that we grew in last year’s garden.
